European Cyclist Federation as part of Cop26 to Encourage and campaign for cycling to be included as an Essential Part of Challenging Climate Change
Sussex cycling campaigner James Thomas has just highlighted to ChiCycle that the European Cyclist Federation are voicing that enabling cycling is an essential part of tackling climate change at the COP26.
We will give more details on this page soon but for the time being details of their campaign are available on the following link.
The ECF report is as follows….
ECF goes
to COP26
8-12 November 2021
Glasgow
The world needs much more cycling if we
are to combat climate change. Worldwide, the transport sector is responsible for 24% of direct CO2 emissions from fuel combustion. Road
vehicles account for nearly three quarters of
transport CO2 emissions, and these numbers
are not decreasing.
Cycling represents one of humanity’s greatest
hopes to shift towards a zero-carbon future and address some of the greatest threats to humanity: climate change, air pollution and premature death from inactivity.
As hundreds of government leaders and delegations prepare to head to Glasgow for
COP26, we are concerned that only zero-emission
vehicles will be on the negotiation table for global
commitments related to transportation.
We believe that there is no conceivable way for
governments to reduce CO2 emissions quickly enough to avoid the worst of the climate crisis without significantly more cycling. As the voice of cyclists in Europe, ECF will be on the ground at COP26 to push governments to prioritise cycling as one of the best solutions to reach global climate goals quickly and effectively.
